Ah yes, the sounds of jackhammers, excavators, and backup beeps.
Some of us can tune out the noise of busy construction, but it’s a big nuisance, both from a noise pollution and air pollution standpoint.
To contain both the debris and noise, developers China Energy Construction Group and Licheng Urban Development Group erected an enormous inflatable dome in Jinan, over the entire worksite.
The idea is simple, but it hasn’t been implemented in this scale before. Indeed, the 521 foot (159 meter) long dome covers 215,000 square feet (20,000 square meters), and is considered the biggest in the world. It’s anchored by a concrete base, and uses huge fans to keep the dome’s shape.

Located next to a 100 year-old church and a school, the covered site will block almost 90% of dust, reduce 80% of construction noise, and prevent wind, rain and snow.
For those of us who have worked next door to large construction sites, we would love to have ambient noise and pollution reduced by such a big factor.

Set to be Jinan’s largest urban renewal project in years, it’s perhaps a template for construction projects around the world, and would be welcomed by nearby residents.

See the inflation of the enormous dome in the video below:
To protect workers inside, there are multiple entrances and exits, and a steady supply of fresh air and dust suppression inside the dome itself.

The dome will be removed once construction concludes, and this new ‘silent mode’ construction could become the norm for large urban areas.
