Modvion in Sweden has unveiled the world’s first full-height wind turbine that is mainly made from wood.

Aside from the rotor blades and generator, the construction is made from laminated veneer lumber (LVL), which is specifically engineered for load-bearing structures.

Reaching an impressive 105 meters tall (344 feet), the wooden tower shows that wood can be as strong as steel, and indeed, even taller than steel towers may be able to reach.

With 30% less weight, the ability to be transported in pieces, and wood’s natural carbon sink, the choice for wood in industrial wind energy seems to be changing.
