For practical buyers, a great mattress needs to tick the right boxes of comfort, longevity, and price.

Usually that would exclude a hand-made horsehair mattress that costs more than many cars. But here we are, and apparently, all of that money buys you the best sleep you can possibly imagine.

Consider us intrigued.

We’ve known about Swedish company Hästens for many years, seeing ads for their exceptionally pricey (and handsome blue plaid) mattresses in high end magazines. We’ve always wondered what would possibly make a mattress so eye-waveringly expensive, and hearing what goes into the build of them, it starts to make sense.

To make the mattresses, horse mane and tail strands are heat-treated, braided, and steamed to create permanent curls that supposedly give the beds an airy yet super supportive structure.

Combined with 2,300 coil springs, the Hästens 2000T that was tested became an instant hit, so much so that the columnist invited her family and colleagues over the test just how comfortable the bed was. Including box spring and headboard, the total package comes to around $75,000.

The mattress comes with over a decade of ongoing care, including a ‘calibration program’, where technicians come to your home, and adjust your mattress for optimal comfort and use.

While the author at Wirecutter wasn’t expecting to love the bed as much as they did, the more we read about the mattress, the more we were impressed.

Considering we spend about a third of our life in bed, it feels like possibly a worthwhile lifetime investment, should you be able to afford it.
