If scuba diving always seemed to be out of the question for you, how about an elaborate catamaran that lowers you and your entire crew into the watery depths?
If it sounds bizarre, it is. But we’re also quite intrigued by the design, a boat many years in the making, called Platypus Craft.
This 28-foot catamaran has a unique seating arrangement down the center of it, that when activated, drops the entire middle of the craft underwater, giving the six seated passengers a fully submerged experience. Platypus refers to it as the ‘passenger basket’, and it essentially turns your craft into a partial submarine for extended periods.
With simple breathing devices that don’t require diving certification, the experience should open up the underwater world to a whole new group of individuals, and allow for a fascinating new perspective.
With electric outboard propulsion and range of 40-80 miles, the Platypus should be quiet, clean, and exciting when it launches in 2025.

A simplistic prototype of the craft from 2022 below shows the general vision, where occupants are taken underwater.
Electric outboard motors make for quiet and clean operation, providing less disturbance to sea life while in motion.

Looking like something out of a James Bond film, the craft’s ‘basket’ has onboard lights and breathing apparatus for occupants.

Requiring no diving certification means that travelers of all types will be able to explore underwater in new ways. In addition, the underwater basket can become a ‘home base’ for scuba divers who want to explore further, using the craft to rest and get more oxygen.

With a catamaran hull, the craft rides on the water with ease, as the passenger basket descends below.

No word on availability or pricing, but we can imagine resorts and maritime adventure companies would love to offer this type of excursion to travelers.
