Our moon has gone through a lot in the 4.5 billion years that it’s been Earth’s satellite.
This animation from NASA shows the various stages of the moon’s formation, from fiery past to cold, cratered celestial body we see today.

Over its 4.5 billion year life, the moon has had an awful lot of those, turning it into the pockmarked celestial body we know and love today.
