People love to talk a big game with their watches. Wrist watches, the the increasingly expensive luxury segment, are now seen as symbols of wealth and status.

But this vintage Rolex GMT-Master ‘Pepsi’ watch has one trait that almost no other watches have. It was worn on the surface of the moon by Commander Edgar Mitchell on the Apollo 14 mission.

While historically, OMEGA was considered the official timepiece of NASA’s astronauts, Mitchell’s preference of Rolex did not go unnoticed. Indeed, the watch held up very well during the Apollo astronauts’ 9 day mission, which included over 9 hours exploring the lunar surface.  Apollo 14 took place in February 1971.

The watch is now up for auction, with bids currently at $49,000. The watch is in remarkably good condition, considering its exciting life, and comes with a letter of authenticity, as well as historical footage and images showing the watch during the mission.
