We have long known about these strange pale creatures that are native to Mexico, and have a particularly strange name. But it wasn’t until recently did we know just how popular axolotls have become.
When we started seeing plushies, night lights, and even axolotl party favors, we knew this unique salamander had hit mainstream pop culture status.

One of the thousands of axolotl plushies available for sale.
Many credit the popularity of the axolotl to games like Minecraft, which has catapulted the creature to stardom.
However, wild axolotls remain critically endangered, with only around 1,000 adults still living in their native Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City.

So what exactly is an axolotl?
The Axolotl is a unique salamander native to the lakes in and around Mexico City.
Unlike most salamanders that take to the land after adulthood, these critters live underwater their whole lives.
They are sometimes known as the Mexican walking fish.
Sadly, they are now critically endangered due to the urbanization of their native habitat in Mexico.
Can all of the fame given to this charming and unique species help save it from extinction in the wild?
We certainly hope so, though the animal’s fate seems tied to the health of its native lake in Mexico City. Axolotls have not only been impacted by pollution, but also the introduction of species like Nile tilapia and carp, which feed on their eggs.
There are campaigns like this from National Autonomous University that allow people to virtually adopt an axolotl, and uses proceeds to protect its habitat.

Do people keep axolotls as pets?
However, they’ve been domesticated for years, and for those that know them, they are a unique animal to keep. It’s important to make sure you get them from a reputable and ethical pet shop.
In addition to being easily sourced and adorable, axolotls are very easy to look after, making them a great option for people that want low-maintenance pets.
According to the sea life specialists who have authored this article, axolotls are very affordable and are one of the most inexpensive exotic pets that you can find. With that said, rarer breeds (and older specimens) can cost a lot more.

Here’s hoping this special and unique creature can not just live on in popular culture, but in its native habitat, for generations to come.
