Sungai Watch is an organization in and around Bali, Indonesia that goes to great lengths to clean waterways that are horribly polluted with plastic waste.

Seemingly endless videos on social media show their crews wading into rivers and swamps that are absolutely ridden with plastic bags, bottles, and trash, and painstakingly cleaning it all up by hand.

Their teams then install plastic barriers to try to catch further garbage from piling up.

The work is both inspiring and depressing, as it shows the problem of plastic pollution at large, and Indonesia’s rampant illegal dumping.  Many communities in Indonesia have no waste infrastructure, and citizens simply dump their plastic garbage into waterways and forests.

Aside from cleaning rivers and installing trash barriers, Sungai Watch now is turning some of that plastic waste into actual products. The first is a set of handsome Ombak Lounger chairs, each of which contains up to 2,000 plastic bags – worth of material rescued from rivers.

The plastic waste is cleaned, ground into shreds, and then heated into durable sheets. A CNC-machine is then used to create the chair’s form, and hand assembled.

The well designed chairs come in a range of colors, and are modern and durable. They’re also weather proof and make a statement about sustainability.

Each chair’s purchase further’s Sungai Watch’s mission.
