Recently nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, Negative Space is a beautiful look at a father and son relationship, told through the art of packing for a trip. The lovingly crafted stop-motion was created by Max Porter and Ru Kuwahata, and Kuwahata was inspired by her own experience of her father’s travel as an airline pilot. Ritualizing the objects of a trip, like socks, underwear, and other clothing, the film is a joy to watch. Via Colossal:

“I remember my dad adjusting his watch precisely before leaving the house and I remember the packing list that he pinned to the wall of his study,” Kuwahata told Variety. “My most vivid childhood memories are connected with objects, textures, and ordinary routines.”
