Pole vaulting is such a strange and unique sport, and we love the commitment the athletes take to their jumps (and falls).

An honorable mention entry into the Minimalist Photography Awards, we see Klaus Lenzen’s endearing series “Pole Vault Minimal”.

In the series, we see only bits and pieces of the athletes and their poles, as Lenzen captures just the essence of their jumps.

A stray hand here, a leg or hair in mid-fall. It’s a unique perspective for this equally unique sporting event.

“Seemingly freed from the constraints of gravity, pole vaulters float through the picture. On their way up, they stretch and contort their bodies.

Reaching the highest point, they gracefully separate from their pole and glide towards the ground – failed attempts included.”
