In the heart of Milan, Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) rises as a lush, green antidote to urban sprawl. Designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, this groundbreaking pair of residential towers seamlessly blends architecture and ecology, offering a blueprint for sustainable cities.
While it’s not the only skyscrapers heavily featuring plants, it was the groundbreaking build that others have been modeled from.

A Towering Forest
Covered in 20,000 plants and 900 trees, Bosco Verticale isn’t just a building—it’s an ecosystem. The vegetation absorbs CO₂, produces oxygen, and traps fine dust, improving air quality for Milan’s residents. Together, the towers host as much greenery as an equivalent 2.5-acre forest, all while housing hundreds of city dwellers.
An interior image from one of the tower’s penthouses shows a modern designed apartment with a true garden in the sky that opens up to residents.

We love the way the plants and trees change colors through the seasons, which simultaneously changes the appearance of the towers themselves.

Natural Climate Control
Beyond its beauty, Bosco Verticale functions as a living climate system. The foliage shields apartments from scorching summer sun while providing insulation in winter, reducing energy consumption. It’s a powerful example of how nature can soften the environmental impact of urban life.
The BBC has a short video about how these buildings can help cities be more resilient in the future.

A Habitat in the Sky
Bosco Verticale isn’t just for people. Birds, insects, and other wildlife call the building home, creating a thriving micro-ecosystem in the heart of the city. It’s proof that biodiversity and urban living aren’t mutually exclusive.

Innovation Rooted in Sustainability
Constructing a vertical forest required cutting-edge engineering to support the weight of trees and ensure their survival. A sophisticated irrigation system recycles rainwater and greywater, keeping the plants thriving year-round.

The Future of Cities
Since it popped up in 2014, Bosco Verticale has turned into a worldwide symbol, sparking similar projects all over the place. It’s a brave new take on what cities can be: greener, healthier, and way more in touch with nature.
Bosco Verticale reminds us that urban design doesn’t have to come at the expense of nature. Instead, it can bring the forest to the city—one tree-covered tower at a time.
