It’s Friday!

It’s been a big week, over a dozen shared stories, ranging from science to entertainment, and beyond.

NOW ONTO THE ARTICLES…

SOME OF THE WEEK’S BEST.

Mid Century Marvel

The Fantastic Four: First Steps brought to screen a unique design for its alternate New York City, visualizing a vintage-future aesthetic that felt refreshing for the franchise.

Most of the superhero movies made today feel derivative, which makes this visual departure especially welcome.

Kasra Farahani, the award‑winning production designer behind Loki, spearheaded the creation of Earth‑828’s unique look. It’s a retro-futuristic version of 1960s Manhattan.

The Big Mikan

Tokyo Dreamlapse by Gavin Heffernan

Some inspiring night footage from Tokyo, the biggest metropolis of them all.

This ‘superlapse’ video shows the nonstop motion in Tokyo, day and night. With a metro population of more than 37 million people, the city is enormous in every way.

What’s a Babirusa?

Our world is so biodiverse, full of creatures we know immediately, and also ones that are rare, unfamiliar, and strange.

Babirusa, meaning “Hog-deer”, are members of the pig family found in Wallacea, or specifically the Indonesian islands of Sulawesi, Togian, Sula and Buru. If a babirusa does not grind its tusks (achievable through regular activity), they will eventually keep growing so as to penetrate the animal’s own skull.

Mmm, literature…

When diving into the charming history of Scratch N’ Sniff, we came upon this fictional line of literary classics from Indigo, updated with scents that match the mood and premise of the books themselves.

The ingredients hover in organized rows above their pots and pans, ready to jump in and create a delicious meal.

The visual style is called knolling, and there’s a delightful satisfaction with the way the items are arranged.

No fly zone?

In this era, we take municipal or area airports for granted. Even small, mostly rural places have small airports. In our recent investigation, there are only five countries anywhere on the planet that lack an airport.

Even more, all five of them are in Europe, one of the most dense, developed places on the planet. What gives?

Keep on zooming in…

From one cent coins to pencils to toothbrushes and lighters, they all are nearly unknown under such extreme macro lenses.

A Final Note

Space Stink

Astronauts who’ve returned from space often describe its smell as surprising: a sharp, metallic scent, almost like hot metal or seared steak. The odor clings to their suits after spacewalks, a byproduct of high-energy vibrations from atomic oxygen reacting with spacecraft materials. It’s not a fragrance anyone could breathe directly in space, but the after-aroma is both alien and oddly familiar.
