Compact Discs had their prominent decades, but have since faded into obscurity. Younger generations would be puzzled by what these thin plastic discs were made for.
That all begs the question, what happened to all of them?
Artist Tara Donovan has decided to make them her medium, using thousands of them in stacked patterns to create stunning sculptures, some of them up to 11 feet tall.
On display in New York’s Pace Gallery, the sculptures are geometric and symmetrical in format, using the iridescent refraction of the discs to create beautiful creations.
The work is emblematic of the CD’s downfall, but also a fitting tribute to a medium that brought millions music and file storage throughout the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.
