The Netherlands may only be a small country, but there’s so much to explore. One of the best ways to get around is on two wheels and cycling through it.

We’ve done it, it’s marvelously fun, and makes for a super memorable adventure.

Major cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht are all well set up to cater for cyclists, while routes dedicated to bikes also stretch across rural areas of the country.

If you’re interested in a cycling holiday in the Netherlands, here are some reasons that might help firm up your plans.

Cycling’s popularity in the Netherlands

It’s estimated that there are nearly 24 million bicycles in the Netherlands. To put that into context, the population of the country is slightly over 17.5 million – so the Dutch are certainly well-stocked when it comes to two-wheeled options.

The country is also home to the world’s largest bike park. A facility at Utrecht rail station stretches over three floors and has rooms for a mind-boggling 12,656 bicycles, promoting sustainable travel into and around the city.

Benefits of cycling holidays in the Netherlands

  • Friendly terrain: The Netherlands is a famously flat country, with very few mountainous areas and most hills at a gentle gradient. This makes cycling super accessible for all abilities and different types of groups, including families with young children.

  • Established infrastructure: Given cycling’s popularity in the country, it’s little surprise that nationwide infrastructure has been put in place to make cycling easier – and often prioritise it over other modes of transport. Cycle lanes are extensive in urban areas, while the country has a string of interlinked ‘junction’ routes to make cycling tours simple and there is an abundance of options for cycle-friendly accommodation and bike hire.

  • Part of the culture: It’s a great way to experience all that the Netherlands has to offer, as cycling is so ingrained in the Dutch way of life. You’ll boost your chances of meeting likeminded people who are both local and holidaying like you.

  • Eco-friendly tourism: Trips with a green side are becoming more of a priority for so many people as we look to combat global issues around the climate emergency. The Netherlands is easily accessible by ferry and can be easily navigated all on bike – if you have the right kit and fitness levels.

  • Temperate climate: Perched on Europe’s north-western fringe against the North Sea, the Netherlands’ weather is typically comfortable for active trips involving cycling. Summer temperatures tend to remain below stifling heat, while winters do not get too cold if you’re venturing across at that time of year.

Cycling routes you can take in The Netherlands

  • Amsterdam – Zandvoort: Start in the country’s biggest city and head west to the coast of this popular resort town. This can be done as a simple day trip if you are staying in Amsterdam.

  • Utrecht: Located in the heart of the Netherlands, you can leave this city in any direction and find something worth cycling to. Our pick is a loop from Langs de Lek to De Amerongse Berg that includes a ferry crossing.

  • Tour of The Netherlands: The Ronde van Nederland was a cycling race held in the country until 2004, taking in the many sights of the country. You can either follow a historic route or make your own.

  • International routes: The Rivers Rhine and Maas provide cross-border routes to Germany and France if you’re looking to plan an epic two-wheeled road trip in Europe.
