An enormous, 25-kilometer long ‘super sewer’ has been completed deep underneath London, in order to protect the River Thames.
Called the Thames Tideway Tunnel, this huge construction project just completed, and will prevent 95% of the sewage discharges that used to pollute the Thames during strong storm events.
By capturing overflow and preventing polluted water from entering the river way, London is keeping its promise to make the Thames one of the cleanest rivers in all of Europe.
Started in 2016, the now completed super sewer is just one way London is making itself more storm resilient in the face of climate change.
A drone video below shows the scale of this massive tunnel, where workers were finalizing parts of the construction.
As part of the construction, over 20 public spaces above ground have been created.
