The Gelephu International Airport in southern Bhutan has an intricate and dramatic structure that helps it stand out on a global stage. The oversized beams utilize a fanciful wood carving inspired by Kachen, the decorative wooden columns found in traditional Bhutanese architecture.

Designed by architecture studio BIG, the unconventional surfaces and treatments make the space feel less like an airport, and more like a place of great cultural heritage.

Using glulam timber and a repeated diagrid structure, the 68,000-square-meter terminal is being built near the Bhutan-Indian border, and plans to complete in 2029.
