Way before Instagram, Burton Holmes was capturing the world in vivid color.

A true pioneer of travel photography and film, he coined the term “travelogue, bringing far-off places to life for audiences who had never left home.

From 1900s Tokyo to ancient Egypt, Holmes’ hand-colored photos and early films made the world feel closer, more vibrant, and endlessly fascinating.

His lens turned travel into storytelling in an essential way, long before most people had passports to travel the globe. Below are a collection of posters from some of these travel films, many of them from the early 1900s.

A century later, his work still inspires us to see, explore, and marvel at the world—just as he did.
