Heavily influenced by decades of work invested by the BBC, the British hi-fi sound merges tonal neutrality, precise sound production and a sense of warmth. The goal for a balanced sound, with detailed mids, a refined soundstage and clarity has spawned an entire industry and established hi-fi names. Global stalwarts including Rega, Naim, Quad and Chord dominate electronics and sources, while Bowers and Wilkins, KEF, and Wharfedale are the few instantly recognisable speaker brands that throw down the gauntlet to the competition across the pond.

With heritage steeped into research conducted by the BBC in the 1960s and 1970s, Harbeth speakers drew inspiration from studio monitors while incorporating the pioneering efforts of founder Dudley Harwood when creating polypropylene driver cones. Praised for their low weight, damping and reduced vibrations, as well as high moisture resistance (for use in walls, ceilings and bathrooms), polypropylene cones soon became the industry standard, featuring in subsequent innovations ranging from home theatre systems to outdoor speakers. That impetus pushed Harbeth into commercialising polypropylene and developing its own line of dedicated speakers.

Harbeth Heritage

The HL Monitor

The HL was the answer to the pronounced resonance and colouration from the Bextrene mid/bass drivers in the KEF monitors that the BBC used in studio reproduction. The speaker was a world first, with polypropylene cone drivers able to handle more power, go louder and provide the sensitivity to reveal more detail.

The new material tightened the bass, produced a natural sound with no tonal colouration, and could easily be shaped and incorporated into existing cabinets. The mid-range warmth the speakers produced meant tube amplifiers were no longer necessary to extract musicality in vocals and instruments.

RADIAL Technology

With the HL racking up sales well over a decade since its introduction, Harbeth began working on new cone designs. This culminated in mid/bass drivers with RADIAL technology, designed to further improve on the sound offered by the HL speaker line with exceptional clarity, nuanced detail, controlled resonance, tonal balance and a wider, deeper soundstage.

Based on patented injection-moulded polymers, the mid/bass driver was used in the hugely popular HL5, the HL Monitor MK4 and the Compact speakers that were the company’s main breadwinners in the late 1990s. Newer RADIAL4 drivers, based on the original design but with improved mechanical properties across all frequency bands, are the foundation for today’s popular XD speaker line.

Current Speaker Lineup

P3ESR XD2 Bookshelf Speakers

These are compact bookshelves designed specifically for smaller listening rooms and incorporating Harbeth’s RADIAL driver mastery for a clear, natural and detailed sound. The new 110mm cone drivers pair with updated crossovers and 19mm ferrofluid cooled tweeters to produce a balanced, lifelike soundstage across the entire 75Hz-20kHz range. All this is wrapped in handmade natural wood veneers. With 6-Ohm impedance and 83 dB sensitivity, the speakers are also exceptionally easy to drive and pair well with a range of amplifiers.

C7ES-3 XD2

Another Harbeth bestseller, the C7ES-3 XD2 is an award-winning mid-sized standmount, praised for class-leading clarity, exceptional dynamics, precise imaging and natural sound. Developed on the underpinnings of the original Compact 7, a design by current owner Alan Shaw, the C7ES-3 XD2 is fitted with the company’s latest RADIAL4 driver technology, updated crossovers and advanced tweeter and the speaker to get for mid-range clarity for vocals and acoustic instruments, a 3-dimensional soundstage, deep, defined and controlled bass and a non-fatiguing listening experience. The speaker works well with all music types, but produces lifelike sound when playing rock, jazz and orchestral music.

SHL5 Plus XD

This is the updated, “extended definition” (XD) iteration of the iconic HL5 of the late 1970s. The 3-way vented design features Harbeth’s RADIAL2 200mm bass/mid driver, a 25mm-ferrofluid cooled tweeter for distortion-free highs, paired with a 20mm domed super tweeter for wider sound dispersion and a smoother, less-fatiguing sound. Resonance is controlled with proprietary cabinet designs (courtesy of BBC research) in handmade veneers. Like the P3ESR XD2, these have a 6-Ohm nominal impedance, but higher sensitivity. Pair with warm and dynamic amps, with power ratings between 50 and 150 watts for superior control.

M30.3 XD2

Built on the heritage of the BBC-developed LS5/9 studio monitor, the M30.3 XD2 is the speaker for mid-range excellence. It produces a slightly warm, smooth sound for extended listening sessions, with controlled mid and low bass, controlled soundstage for immersive realism and tonal balance across the whole band. Choose this for detail, neutrality, coherence and musicality. Built to the same high standard as other Harbeth speaker lines, with thin-walled real wood veneers, quality crossovers and an updated tweeter, with front porting for smooth off-axis response.

NLE-1

Harbeth embraced emerging trends with the active NLE-1 bookshelf speaker, while keeping true to its sonic roots of neutrality and musicality. This compact speaker incorporates the company’s signature RADIAL driver designs, paired with ultra-low dispersion 50-watt Class-D amplifiers and DSP processing to bring out unmatched detail and exceptional resolution in every recording.

A treat is the rear personality mode switch, offering an additional octave of bass for low-volume late-night listening. Pairing sources is simplified with both balanced XLR and RCA inputs, allowing easy connection with turntables and streamers. Choose this for the traditional Harbeth sound, in a smaller, simplified hi-fi setup that eliminates the need for separate amplification.

Buying Considerations and Pairing with the Right Equipment

Key considerations when buying your next pair of Harbeth speakers are room sizes, equipment pairing and placement. Smaller bookshelf and standmount designs (the P3ESR XD2, M30.3 XD2 and the NLE) work best in small to mid-sized rooms, with the speakers placed a foot off the wall and mounted on dedicated stands. This places the drivers and tweeters at ear level.

Larger models (the C7ES-3 XD2, SHL5 Plus XD and the M30’s bigger brother, the M40.5 XD2 standmounts) go louder and are suited to medium to large rooms, with more extension in the bass and a wider soundstage. For optimal sonic reproduction, pair passive speakers with decently-powered pre and power or integrated amplifiers. Prime candidates are solid state and valve tube/hybrid offerings from Pass Labs, Hegel, Naim Audio, Sugden, Luxman and Copland. These provide oodles of power and control, rich detail and dynamics without colouring the Harbeth’s neutral tonality.
